More Info About New Braunfels, TX

New Braunfels was founded by Prince Carl of Solms - Braunfels who was born in 1812 near Braunfels in Hanover, Germany. Having read several books about Texas, Prince Carl decided to explore the land for himself, but not before meeting his future wife, Maria Josephine Sophie. Once he arrived in Texas he bought 1,300 acres on the Guadalupe River, this is what eventually became New Braunfels. A bit of a romantic, Prince Carl longed for Sophie to come live with him in Texas, which is why he built "Sophie's Castle", or as we know it today, "Sophienburg".
